How to Build a Portfolio That Gets Attention

Jan 26, 20267 min readWorldDollar.quest Editorial Team

The 3–5 Piece Rule

Clients skim. Three to five strong, relevant pieces beat twenty random ones. Every piece should include a two-line story: the problem, your solution, and the result (even an imagined one for sample work).

Where Portfolio Pieces Come From

  • Concept redesigns of real products (labeled as concept work)
  • Free projects for local businesses or nonprofits
  • Self-initiated projects — build the tool you wish existed
  • Templates and demo assets that show your process
  • Volunteer work for communities you care about

Presentation Beats Polish

A simple case study with context ("this bakery needed online orders; I built a one-page site; orders grew in the first month") is more persuasive than a beautiful image with no story. Show process: brief, drafts, final, outcome.

Where to Host It

Behance or Dribbble for designers, GitHub + live demos for developers, a simple Notion or Framer page for everyone else. One link that always works is better than five that sometimes load.
