How to Find Legitimate Remote Jobs (and Avoid Scams)

Feb 3, 20268 min readWorldDollar.quest Editorial Team

Where Legitimate Roles Live

  • LinkedIn (filter: Remote) — set alerts for your exact skill
  • We Work Remotely, Remote OK, Wellfound — remote-first boards
  • Company career pages — many "remote" roles are never aggregated
  • Your platform network — Upwork clients often convert to contracts

Red Flags That Scream Scam

  • Pay-to-start: any "training fee", "equipment deposit", or "registration cost"
  • Interview only via chat apps, with urgency and guaranteed hiring
  • Checks sent before work starts (classic overpayment scam)
  • Vague job description + salary that is absurdly high for the role

What a Strong Application Contains

A one-page tailored resume with outcomes ("cut load time 40%", "managed 12 client accounts"), a short cover note that mentions the company specifically, and links that work: portfolio, GitHub, or samples.

Remote employers screen for written communication. Clear, concise, error-free messages are half the interview.

Timezones, Trials & Getting Paid

Clarify overlap hours early — "available 9–1 EST overlap" reads as professional, not desperate. Paid trial tasks of one or two hours are normal; ten-hour unpaid "tests" are not. Confirm currency and payment method (often Deel, Wise, or Payoneer) before signing.
